Default My First grow and setup box

Hi guys,

well I've been a toker for over 19 years (dread to work out costs!) and decided to finally plant some of the seeds I've kept for over 6 years.

so without any preparation and investigation on the matter i put 3 of them to germinate. I used the airing cupboard and damp kitchen towel method to germinate, once they had sprouted i used some of my garden compost and perlite and vermiculite and some retaining gel, and put them in some pots and put em under the stairs with the light on constantly.

well this was my first error - thinking a 100w bulb would be enough for these babies. the stretch i got within the first 2 weeks was horrendous.

so i made 2 x 1m leads with a standard 100w bulb in each socket and hung them over the plants to within about 6 inches. (this stopped the stretch and growth was good but slow)

so i bit the bullet and started reading up - this led me to here greenpassion.org

i decided to invest on some equipment as funds are low i can only gradually get stuff, and my first was a 6400k CFL envirolite 200w to get these babies corrected and in good veg.

so i cleared out some space in my only available enclosed space (my tank storage cupboards (hot water tank and cold water tank)
height clearance was fixed due to the design of the cupboard, but this did not impact on the plants at all, growth was getting better, and stretch had stopped. Great!

well at least i can now prepare them for some proper conditions and keep an eye on them in the mean time.

i decided that i would go the stealth option as much as possible.

i got an old hifi cabinet 3 door (2 front and 1 top ) removed some panels and started the box.

pics are in order - i still have more room inside but i did not want to completely gut it in case i wanted a veg shelf later on and also storage.

i have used 2 x coolermaster 120mm fans one for intake and one for exhaust. connected via a 400w ATX PSU with switches for independant on and off function. i also have a deskfan in top left corner hanging for air circulation.

i should really have trained them for LTP or SOG but i only knew about these since starting the flower cycle.
can i still train ?
i cant see any nodules or pistiles yet though and im now into 2nd week of flower. ill get some close ups tonight for anyone that can help determine sex.

also any ideas for my box i would appreciate your comments or ideas.

from a complete noob thanks for greenpassion i have some kind of grow area now.

i have 2 leaks of light as you can see but these are very minimal and i will correct this, everything else seems ok. temperature lights off is around 24 - 25 and lights on max is around 30 with no other ventilation. if i put a fan blowing in the direction of the box intake i can get it down to 27-28 (this is partly due to hot humid nights and very sunny days recently)

Hey Hollah! Welcome to Green Passion! Nice to see how well you are doing already and so very glad you found us! That is the spirit, jump right in with a grow journal! Way to go! Why don't you also drop by the thread "introduce yourself" and tell us a bit about yourself. I think either you are British or another Canadian like I am. (It is the celcius temps and the airing cupboard that tipped me off, very British!)

Love to here about your life and where you are on the globe and welcome to GP!

Your cabbie looks just wonderful. You have a great start and if you wish we will help you solve your problems and learn how to shorten your plants. It is not too late to do some low stress training on those babies. Lots of time yet. Here is one link to check. Lots of info in there about LST'ing or using that hieght to your advantage.

http://www.greenpassion.org/f46/low-...-wieghts-5995/

And all of us strangers are just friends you haven't met yet.

Peace.

Ok well opened cab tonight and a nice smell awaited me. hmm it seems like so far i have 2 females but i will post pics just to get a consensus. i cant tell from the 3rd one yet. no sign showing anything at the moment, well for my untrained eye anyhow.

thanks for the support i may need it.! i will read up from that link about LST and see if i can get some weights on the babies.

thanks jangel and whitetrash.

i will look at my options for additional lighting. still quite limited in there. would it have to be a CFL of the same strength or could i use FL ? or what would you recommend adding in this small cab.

thanks

Okay, cfl's produce a lot of heat. You have to be able to deal with that. Flourescents are great, in my opinion. What is your budget like? I am very found of T-5 flourescents. I think they do wonderfully with a lot less heat. But they can be pricey initially. Take a look at some other new members threads that we have gone over all this with. I will add the links to this in a bit.

Okay, here are 3 recent threads dealing with the same issues you have Q's about. There are more but this should get you started. One other thing: what country are you in? This will have something to do with what I can recommend for you as different countries have different suppliers. Read these through and then feel free to join in and ask whatever you wish where ever you wish! And have fun!

Hey hollah,

Welcome to the "Greatest Show On Earth". This is without a doubt, the best place to learn and share all things dealing with MJ.

Looks like you're off to a great start. Like jangel said, read around. Try the FAQ's. We have our own and the Classic Overgrow FAQ's. Both are extremely valuable sources of information.

Any questions, someone will jump in with answers or point you in the right direction.

Pappy

Hi again guys.

my budget is limited but not too limited. i can spend around £30 -£50 for bulbs etc. i have spent so far in the last month about £200 on equipment.

T 5 fluorescents - these may be cheaper than the envirolites from what i can see.
I am in the UK
i have been browsing the forums for a couple of weeks now reading up and learning and i must say what a great community you have here at greenpassion.

well i don't have a great camera at the moment for up close shots but i definitely have 2 females in my cab (the ones in the little brown pots)
the other in the larger pot is still not showing any signs of sex yet. but im sure with the law of averages that this should be a male.
thanks for the links i have some light reading to do today and alot of knowledge to digest.
my temperature is not too bad i personally dont think. i am managing to keep it to around 25-29 degrees and around 40-50 % humidity.

update as of today. i knew that the 2 in the brown pots were female and the other one had shown no signs of sex until today and i must say i am shocked. i was not expecting to get anything but growing experience from these 6 year old + seeds but it turns out that not only have i had luck in germinating these old babies and keeping them healthy but i now have a lovely trio of ladies... BIG Smiles from me.... hehe..
and to think that i nearly chucked it out last night in favour of keeping 2 healthy females. so glad i read around first and decided to put her back in for another night or 2.

again thanks to the info on this forum for helping me along.

Hey hollah,

If it had been a male, you could grow it somewhere away from the females and save pollen from it to make some seeds on selected buds. That is, only if you have another secure spot. Just a thought, stoned as I am.
