how many plants can you grow under 1 400w light?

i grew six. they were in a hydro system so they were pretty close together, but if ur looking for ideal conditions then i say 1 plant for every 100watts... so 4

depends how your setup is if done right prolly around 10. medium sized plants with good reflector and a good grow room.
but personally for about 10-15 i use 1 600w hps and 4-5 500w cfls

It really depends on how big you want the plants. If you have small plants, you can flower as many as will fit under the light. Keep the canopy level, so there is no wasted light shining on the floor. If you have just a few, say 4, then you will either need to cut some lower branches and foliage, or supplement the light to the lower parts of the plants.
I have 6 plants under a 400w now, vegging. I am letting them get some good root growth, (just transplanted them), and letting the branches fill out some. Then, they will go under 1000w for flower. The bigger one in the photo, will be one of my moms.
