Wink Cloning a Flowering Plant ~ Will it work?

Okay my friends, the question has been raised on whether or not a plant in flower will clone. Please see this thread here:

http://www.greenpassion.org/f16/aint...it-young-6206/

In order to help others I have tried this. My problem and reason for doing this is the fact that the two plants taken as clones to be mothers for my Nepali Grizzly have not stopped flowering since they where rooted. Clones where cut on May 16th. Rooted well, nothing unusual. They are under T-5 light, with a bar of cfl's of mixed numbers, 6400K and 2700l lumens. Here are some pics. I expected them to go back into veg. Now what do I do? I have more beans but do not want to start this whole show again with sexing etc. so I am taking clones and hoping they will root. Here are the mums.

The original plants for these where started in April.

You can see what difficulty I had trieing to even pick which side branch to make into clones. I picked the two lowest branches on each, and with a wish and a prayer I cut two from each and removed all the tiny buds, leaves etc up to the top. (no it did not go to waste, I flash dried it and we smoked it last night and it was good!) The branches of these where woody so in order to encourage roots I shaved off with a razor blade the outside hard coating on the lower parts of the buds. A dear sweet person sent me some rapid rooters so I am using them for this lot of clones. I have them in a pair of plastic domes used to sell organic lettuce. Makes a great cloner for our purposes. I also put them in a few six packs from flowers and some perlite so they don't get too soggy, and a 1/4 inch of water in the bottom, under one T-8 flourescent tube. I have dipped them in rooting hormone powder and used RO water to wet them. Now we wait. Other clones as well in there, as these plants are going to flower and have not had great luck cloning them up to now.

From what I have heard from other members it IS possible to clone flowering plants but takes longer than normal. Let's see!

Peace!

Good luck with your new babies, jangel. Let's hope they put down some nice healthy roots. Maybe the ganga gods will smile on your girls, and they will continue to flourish, without going back into veg. If they never really vegged in the first place, I can't see how they would re-veg after cloning. But, it would be great if they make roots AND continue to produce more bud.

if the branch is woody in veg it takes already very long to root the clone, once flowering is introduced things will get tough - i wish you the best with this clones, and trim the young buds off so that roots will grow and not the buds, could help a bit

Thanks Pappy and Green. I did take all the buds I could off, but there are so many, JUST buds so didn't want to do all or the plant would have nothing to feed it. Hey, if you can root woody trees and have them take this SHOULD work. I lose nothing by trying, right? There are very short internodal spaces as well. I might even,if I can free some time somewhere, someday, try air layering one, when the branches grow longer, if they do! I have done this with trees and houseplants so it is not new to me.

FIY: Air layering is when peat moss or some other type of media is held against a node to produce roots without severing it from the main plant. This allows hard to root plants to continue to support and feed the eventual clone, while roots are growing where you want them to. Quite often sheet shagnum moss or some such media is used and wrapped in plastic and kept moist in position. Once roots form it is severed from the mother plant and will survive on it's own.

Okay, all the little planties are still green. I have trimmed and trimmed all the flowers I can safely remove from them, and still have any green left! Here's the pics. At least they have not gone to mush yet! LOL! I have them under a T-8 florescent tube. No heat underneath, in rapid rooters. Don't want to bug them or disturb them yet to see if they are rooting. All things in time. They all look to have grown a bit, stretched toward the light.

Time for an update folks. I have had some problems with these little ones. Everywhere there where pistols that where not removed they molded. I removed all the spots I could as they formed. I still have 2 left that look to be taking root. And one stick. LOL! It seems to have rooted though! I will see! I also topped both of these plants and now they seem to be sending out longer, more cloneable shoots but STILL in full flower. Here's the latest pics.

Peace.
