carbon filters -- how long do they last?

Who can give me some info on the life of carbon filters?
How can you tell when it's time to change them -- does the room run hotter? I can't seem to find too much info online. I have a g.h. 5' filter with an 8" fan attached; I think they last approximately 1 year.
Any comments or suggestions?
Anyone using the brand phat filter?

Hey Bud boy you are right about 1 year to 18 mos.Your fan will work harder and the smell will not all be gone.Yes the room temp will rise alittle.The makers say 1 to 1-1/2 years. Peace

Think of all the variables that would effect a carbon filter...quality and amount of carbon...flow volume...amount of filterable agents in the air flow...temperature...etc...let your nose be the best guide...if its not working as well as it used to its time to change it or refill it. That being said most people including myself would agree with Toke as an AVERAGE life for carbon filter.
