Rep Power: 163 | | Anyone nuts enough to buy soil online?
Man, after pricing soil shipping cost a local purchase is the only way to go?
(FF Ocean)
Local it's $32.99 vs. $13.99 online but the average shipping for 5 bags of the 1.5 cube bags is $163.
Local would be $173. includes tax.
What do you guys do to keep the cost down, mix your own?
When dose mixing cost more when doing a smaller run?
Thanks

I guess I'm "lucky". My hydro shop sells it at $17.99/bag.

I get Fertilome 3 cubic ft. @ $19.99 from a nursery. It's great, straight out of the bag. This is all I've used for about a year.
Oh, yeah. I actually did buy some FF Ocean Forest and a couple coco coir blocks. It was part of a larger order.

I'm blessed. I pay on average $9-$10/bag of FF OF. However I would think if you went in with a friend or two, bought a flat, and contacted Fox Farms directly to ship to you, you might be able to get a great deal. Can't hurt to check it out. I think it's a great product, to the point I don't use anything else. Here's their # if ya want further info-- Toll Free: (800) 4FOXFARM GL HH

It's a GREAT idea, HH....but the shipping costs will still run the price WAYYY up per bag....even on pallet shipments.
In most cases, while it may SEEM like the hydro store is ripping you off at $20-25 per bag...I know for a fact that there's very little profit for the store in such products because the major wholesalers (hydrofarm, sunlight/BWGS) all EXCLUDE soil and growing mediums from the "Free" shipping they offer the stores on orders above 5K wholesale. Hydroton is also in this category. Both of these products/any other soils you may see are more than likely 'loss leaders' for the store but they MUST stock them or folks will go elsewhere to buy their grow supplies.
it's a dirty business...LOL.
