Rep Power: 78 | | newcomer heat issue....
hey everyone, my name is AcE....I'm new to the whole MJ scene....I've been coming to this site for about a month now reading everything I can in prep for my first grow....I built a box, put together an automatic watering system, and got some potting soil....I have been in the process of trying to acquire seeds for a few weeks now and have finally got some (bagseed) .... I am a technical kind of guy, so I thought about going Hydro or Aero, but at the last moment decided to do the first grow in some potting soil... I got some 10-10-10 mirical grow soil from a local home improvement store... I have germ'd about 8 to 10 seeds in a cup of water (well water from our pump) and about 5 have cracked.....my box is very small, about 3ft Height x 2ft Square.... I live in the southern panhandle so our summers are very hot and humid, and the box is in a non-ac'd shed outside...my main problem so far is heat....its in the 90s during the day, and i've got 200W+ of CFLs with a mix of colors....I turned on the lights and left them for an hour the other day and it got up to 130-F in there...NOT GOOD....so i decided to build me a DIY carbon filter with a computer fan.....which has helped....but it is still staying like 110-F with the lights on....I bought a small fan to circulate air in there today, so we'll see how that goes....i am really at whits-end trying to figure out how to cool this thing....I'm thinking about an intake fan, but i dont know if i can keep the box at a negative pressure like that....i am thinking about bringing the project into my closet of my office, but with the inlaws currently living with me, i'm hessitent... anyone got any ideas on cooling this thing? |

Without an actual cooler your not going to go lower than 5-6 degrees above ambient temp, and thats with 2-4" exhaust and intake(I think were only about 6 miles from the sun down here,When you step out side you can feel your skin start to sizzle)My veg box isn't much bigger than yours and my inside temp gets down to 2-3 degrees above ambient with the doors open and fans running. But add that to 95-98+ degrees in the shade, if your shed is in the sun the inside temps are compairable to that of a car in the sun(130+)Try a solar\120v roof vent to keep shed air moving.I use 2-6" 240cfm duct booster fans from W.D. Armstrong $27.00 ea to move the air thru an 8'x8' room

Howdy TOTA! (sorry...too longa name!)
Your enclosure need input and exhaust fans, running 24/7. Plants must have fresh air tor eplenish the Co2 in the box. You can use smaller computer fans (either 120V or 12V with a transformer). One a the bottom side for intake, and exhaust on the upper side (or top) for exhaust.
As for the odor, you have little to worry about until you start them into flower. I would suggest the OdorSok or a like unit, they work great for small grows and allow near -0- aroma to escape.
Out in that shed it is going to get blazing hot some mid-summer...this might be an issue, so the more air you can get into the shed/enclosure, the better.

I hate to be the devils advocate but I have grown in the closet with nosy teens around, and they still do not have a clue. It cannot be that hard to do with your inlaws there. Do they go through your closets?
I do not see how, unless you can air condition that shed you can keep the temps down, my friend. Maybe you should rethink this. Sorry to poke my nose in but Hey, Just my humble opininion.
Good luck whatever you chose, and you are in the right place to get lots of help from many very smart people.
Peace.

1- 5 gal bucket w\lid
1-holmes\honeywell 9" round fan(walmart/home depot)
1-large humidifier wick(It may take 2)
1-fountain pump 130gpm
1- full circle mister head w\spike & riser tube(micro mister 3-7' radius 1/4" tubing head)
Take the 5 gal bucket drill 3/8" holes around the sides starting 4" up from bottom to just under the lip(THE MORE HOLES/THE MORE AIR)
Secure humidifier wick to inside of bucket walls using zip ties through the holes.
Setup fountain pump into bottom center of bucket adapt output of pump to 1/4" mister riser & head.(set hight 1" below top of wick) cut out a couple holes in the bucket to run the cord out(above first row)
Disassemble fan from base(make sure your fans switch isn't in the base section)use fan to mark circle onto bucket lid,cut out hole. Mount fan into lid and seal with duct tape.
Fill bottom of bucket with 3" water, snap lid/fan on top,set fan high, plug in
and presto you have a cooler(you may need a few of these and place them inbetween plants)
THEORY: the water being misted will evaporate into the air being moved by the fan and create cooling 10-20 degrees
AND GUESS WHAT? IT ALSO INCREASES HUMIDITY
Parts available from Harbor frieght/Home depot/Walmart cost about $55.00 usd

. | I got to agree with Jangel. That shed is only going to get 'er during the summer months.
FWIW, I grow in a separate shop built inside my garage, and have had many visitors walk by the fan intakes and never even blink...there is no smell or any fan noise they can hear. Not 5 ft. away from them are 10 plants in flower and 8 in veg. They don't smell squat.. (but I don't let folks hang around out there either...walking through the garge is one thing...to hang around is another, and would likely result in my grow being found.

I have read a lot about heat and it is something that I really dont understand. Most cannabis is grown in regions that are farther south than most of us are, like Mexico, Columbia, Afganistan, Africa. Do they grow it during the winter months? How much heat can these plants take? Now I am sure if you got them locked up in a small place with no ventilation they will fry but even my vegatable outside in the garden can take the heat if they are watered. So do the native countries of cannabis grow in the winter?
Thanks,
Madman

I agree with Jangel and Iso on going into the closet (no offence for those who have recently come out) also I would put an inconspicuous lock on it...HidHut has those odor socks and I have felt happy with them. My next grow has the 3 out of 5 senses goal
no one can:
see it
hear it
smell it

Ya know what guys, I too have never heard about an odour sock. I will have to check them out cause it could be just the ticket for me. I want to put a T on my vortex fan and take one side into the flower room, which will be walled off from the rest of the room. If it is what I think it is it would be better than a can type carbin filter.

You can see the OdorSok at HidHut: OdorSok 6" x 16" 380 CFM Air Filter
Look under "Air Purification" in their index (left side) and you can see all the assorted sizes.
Great little tool!

Hey Ace,welcome to GP.Good chioce on doing a soil grow for your first grow. There so many things to go wrong and in hydro it happens fast.Soil alittle more for giving.it sounds like you are down aroung fla with me.It's to hott to grow in a shed that's not insulating and a ac unit.Plants dont like it to hot.Not over 83degree.If you can get some foam broad from homedepot and line the shed with it and you will have to get a air conditioner. To help the heat problem you can run your lights at night to help keep the heat down. There's not much you can do but insulate and put a ac in the shed.If you need more just give me a hollar. Peace

Looks very good. I am impressed. Good for you. You will at least now have SOME control over temps and your babies will be closer. You will do fine.
