Default new guys first question

i used the search button & also gone back 10 pages in the newcomers section.

im wanting to find out, how much light i would need to keep alive a mother & also root 4 to 6 clones, & then veg clones for a little while before going into flower room?

ideally i would like to use CFL or mabe even small T5? lights, im trying to weigh up the pros & cons of running mabe a 150W ballast or X amount of smaller cfl bulbs.

the flower area is running a 250W hps, but buying beans after beans can be expensive.

i daily read a couple of other "hobby related" forums, but i feel im a little bit of a noob to be asking in the other forums, as there for more experienced growers, that was untill i stumbled onto this forum, & from looking & reading around here, it looks like your all more noobie friendly...

we can help you for sure
I am a big fan of CFL's and others use t-5's to good effect.
first please read this at least twice http://www.greenpassion.org/f22/cfl-tutorial-2592/
That may clearly answer several of you questions and a few you don't even know that you would have had to ask later....
Happy to follow up with you after you check it out and Welcome

I love my T-5's. As do other members here. I have one small set, 4 tubes, 24 inches with 6 large veging plants under them. More than you are talking about. I also have some bonsai mums which I am growing under T-8 flourescents. Take a look through my indoor journal and see what I have veging under mine and what else you can do. I have used cfl's, T-5's, T'8's, MH, and HPS in this thread.

Also, go to inside growing and read the section on CFL's. Someone more informed on what the best is can advise you. I do know you will need a mix of 5000k to 6500K for veg and add a couple of flowering ones, 2200k to 2700k for flower and the light should be good. It depends on what your budget is which way you go. I find florescents cooler than cfl's and I like them.

Hope this helped you. Oh, just click the links in my signature to see my journals.

Peace, and again, welcome to Green Passion!

theres nothing worse than being called a n00b for asking a question. thats why i chose this site personally. everyone here has compassion for the new guys. I wouldn't call myself experienced as im still on my first grow to date. but with the help of the people here, you might as well forget the term newbie right now lol as you won't be one for long.

the one thing about lighting is that everyone will most likely tell you something different, as everyone has had different experiences. personally i would go with whats good for the wallet. my cfl set up is doing great things in the flower room and im only running 6, 23 watt bulbs for 1 plant.

for a mother to be self sufficiant i would say a few 2 foot tubes would be fine for 1. factor in the clones and you might need to move up to the 4 foot ones.

don't buy anything before you know exactly where you are going, as it just makes it easier on your brain, and you use less gas making one long trip than going to the store every couple of days like i do lol.

I too come here first because of the atmosphere. On other forum's it's either their way or it's the wrong way. Not lets see what we can do to make it YOUR way. If you think you've read everything go back and read it again. I've been in the clouds more than a few time from the reading without reviewing. For me, i started with "Grow 8oz...". If you do choose cfls, at least 26w and keep them no further than 3".

good luck.

thanks for the sound advice, i have been looking into T5`s, but im thinking there just to large in size for what im trying to create, so the CFL route seems more the obvious route to take.
on the plus side, if i need a little more light, i can just pop another cfl in, makes perfect sense to me, as im wanting to use/try to get away with using as little elec as possible.
well im off to the drawing board to see what i can come up with.

How big is the space you are hoping to veg in? For the small T=5's they are small, mine are 24 inches. You are right about the cfl's as well, you can adjust to your hearts content. I do use both, so I understand what you are saying. Give us a size and we can help you better. Also, no matter which you use, you will still need an exhaust system, as heat is our enemy. You must have an exhaust and cold air intake. Exhaust high up in the cab or box, as hot air rises, for instance, 4 inches, must have a passive cold air intake lower in the grow to add twice the measurement of cold air to the space. So that would be 8 inches of passive cold air intake at the bottom and opposite side to aid in air circulation. That is more important than anything else, almost. Especially with cfl's as they do produce a lot of heat. Let us know further details and we will help you with it.

Peace
