Default Need some Knowledge

Hey all,
So I have a few more questions...my first seeds just sprouted on 9/13...there are 9 of them so hoping for a few females out of the bunch.

When is the earliest to actually know if a plant is male of female? (dont want to mess up the first crop by leaving a male in.)

Can lights be all around the plants? or is it best to have them overhead? (no matter what i will still have lights hanging overhead)

How often do the sprouts need to be watered? I read that when the top soil drys they need more what, but the top soil can dry within a matter of hours...does this mean I need to water every few hours while there little? from eveyhting I have read I thought cannabis plants liked less water?

I am sure I will have more questions....questions breed questions lol.
Thanks much in advanced for the help!

Hope all is Well,

well there are plenty of factors that set the time on sexing, strain, gender, care/stress. the best way to tell is to just be patient. you don't need an eagles eye to catch a male before it pollinates if you have done your homework.

lots of people use cfls to surround the lower parts of their plants, just follow the same rules "Make sure the bulb isn't right on top of the plant but within a close perimeter"

when in the early stages its best to keep them moist not soaked. don't go grabbing your watering can everytime you see a little dry spot, the easiest way for me is to use the weight method. lift the pot and check how heavy it is compared to when you last watered it. If you shake the pot side to side a little bit and it feels like there is still some weight in the bottom wait an extra day it wont kill it.

When is the earliest to actually know if a plant is male of female? (dont want to mess up the first crop by leaving a male in.) as already stated depends on so many things, but once the plants are sexually mature and you change the light cycle genrally you can tell in a week or less, but sometimes more. There are methods to tell sooner but they are a pita and may stunt your growth

Can lights be all around the plants? or is it best to have them overhead? (no matter what i will still have lights hanging overhead) mostly overhead some on the sides...

How often do the sprouts need to be watered? I read that when the top soil drys they need more what, but the top soil can dry within a matter of hours...does this mean I need to water every few hours while there little? from eveyhting I have read I thought cannabis plants liked less water? sprouts often don't need to be watered at all....if they were planted in very moist soil to begin with....just spray the soil with a mist enough to keep it moist...mist the soil not the seedling....don't let the surface dry until at least you get those first true leaves

I am sure I will have more questions....questions breed questions lol.
Thanks much in advanced for the help!

Hope all is Well,
Peace

It is best to water around the edge of the plant, not the middle as this way the roots seek the water OUTWARDS. One other thing Green taught me: Fill a pot with your soil mix and keep it unplanted and dry. Then, when you water your baby well, feel the wieght difference. Keep that pot with no plant and dry around, so every time you check your plant, just heft the two of them and you will know if it needs watering. Also, once you get true leaves make sure you soak that baby until water comes out of the bottom of the pot. Otherwise you will have dry spots and your plant roots will not grow towards the unused dirt.

And just to ward off the next q I know is coming, do not fertilize those babies until the first round water leaves have dried up. Then only a 1/4 strength for a while. More plants are killed with kindness than with neglect. and as Pappy says "don't forget, pot is a weed"

....and you are also hereby ordered to have fun!!!!

Peace

Slayer,

Jangel gave you some good info...stick to it and you'll be fine.

Here is what a 10 day old seedling should look like (or close to it). Fat and happy..

Iso,
My plants are at about 10 days old and they dont look quite as big or healthy as yours...they are all smaller and only have there first set of real leaves with the second set coming in....does this mean I am doing something wrong?? I have been watering just as you and jangle and many others have told me too... I am still trying to get pictures up so I can show you all what I am looking at...hopefully will have them soon. Thanks for all the help!

Hope all is Well

Whammy,

They are sitting about 4" under the 4 lamp T-5 fixture, and currently vegging under lights that are on 24/0. I let them get fairly dry before feeding, as I want them hunting with those new roots for the water..

Temp/humidity in that room is super-stable right now, and for the last 2 weeks it has been nearly perfect at 75 degrees and 50% humidity.

Aside from the hours of good conversation I've had with them that's really all I did..! (and baby plants haven't got much to talk about...LOL)
