Default Germination help...

So I started germinating some seeds in soil...they were just random bag seeds...but nohting happened even after a week...so I pulled them out and started to germinate them in water. I am just wondering if theres any chance they will germinate?

I started to germinate more seeds along with the ones I had planted that should work no problem even if the planted ones wont work...i have also used the paper towel method of germinating...anyone have any opinion on which is more reliable?

These are all tests until the seeds I ordered get here, but they were from some really nice 'erbs so hopefully they will germinate and grow out nicley.

Whammy,

I just started some seeds on Monday, a total of 12.

Everyone seems to be a bit different, and being a newbie at seed hatching I kinda came up with my own process that works for me. I soak the seeds in tea (just regular tea) in the fridge overnight, then plant in the light soil mix I use in 3" pots.

When I push my finger down to make the seed hole, I pour 1 tbl of pH'd water in, then drop in the seed and cover, then add another tbl of water over the top. Cover with a newpaper and leave about 2' from the T-5's (for warmth).

As soon as they poke their little heads out I move them from that tray to the bench, about 3' (thats feet) under the T-5's till they get their first set of leaves, then move them closer, but no closer than about 18" (I want them to stretch a bit...I'll show you that later).

So far I have 4 germed and above ground as of this morning, with what looks to be about 6 more ready to push through the top soil.

ISO

LOL Using what works for me is what we all do here and share what we learn. ISO does things well. Watch him and learn.

I always plant 'em in the same or similar soiless mixture I am going to grow them in....1/4 inch deep....warm and moist but not wet....I get close to 100% and don't have to worry about handling them carefully and checking them also no shock.

I started using a couple of damp coffee filters instead of paper towels. I put them in a butter cup with a few 1/16" holes punched around the top, then cover. First time I got 6 out of 6. Last time (mistery seeds) I got 5 out of 8. I think the filters stay damp longer and breath better than paper towels.

You can't go wrong with Rapid Rooter's. Love those things. I have had 100% germination rate, (although two seeds grew upside down). Just soak the seeds in water over night until they absorb water and sink. You can plug the hole with some shredded RR material. Then add 1/4 inch of water to the bottom of the tray and you are set. Then sow them seeds. Some seeds have a hard shell, and may need to be scuffed first, before soaking. Just place a piece of sand paper in a match box, ad your seeds and shake.
