Rep Power: 23 | | Germinating Old Seeds
so I came across a cache of seeds from the mid-to-late 70s. its all from good strains I'm told. obviously the germination rate isn't going to be that great but because they were stored in ideal conditions I am pretty sure some will sprout. has anyone else tried this? has anyone grown or tried to cross strains like acapulco gold, panama red, columbian gold, with modern strains? how good do you think the old strains were if they are grown to be sensimilla, compared to the stuff commonly found today?
do the "good" strains from the 70s even measure up to the average strains found today?
any tips?

Gr8t find you may have a diamond in the rough there. You may be surprised to find they will germ and grow very well.
Are they in any type of breeder packs, separated, cataloged or were these bagseed from various strains in the 70's? Maybe there is a gr8t story in them there seeds.
Congrats and good luck please post up some pics as soon as you can get something going.

they came from an old friend who said that they are almost certain that it contains at least some acapulco gold, columbian gold, maui wowie, panama red, and possibly thai stick. none of the seeds this person saved were mid to low grade, only high quality stuff. I wasn't born till the 80s so I never got to try those old strains but I've heard great things about them. they were stored in glass vials inside of a sealed plastic bag and stored in a dark place where the temperature was near-constant and not humid. unfortunately they weren't marked so I'll have to try and identify them once they grow. I will definitely post pics as soon as I start them.

Go ahead and germ those beans! The best way for old beans is the wet pappertowel routine. Those old strains from the 70s have never been matched! I smoked some Chocalate Columbian in the late 70s that made me feel like I was on Acid! The original Thai Sticks did the same but they say they were dipped in Opium. Who knows? All I do know is strains like Acapulco Gold, Panama Red, Chocalte Thai and Columbian have not been matched! I had a friend with some bag seed from the 70s that was incredible! You could say it made you feewl like you were Drunk on Marijuana. Thats how strong the buzz was. He lost the strain forever because he was greedy and did not share the beans. Bummer! Those are old beans so good luck with the germanation. Hope they work for you!

Actually, the best germ method for OLD seeds and
underdeveloped seeds(white), is to IMMERSE then in COOL
water not warm, about 60deg max. Do not use a heat mat
or heater of any type. Let the water come to room temp on its own.
If the whitish/underdeveloped seeds are viable, after about 24hrs
the 'crater' end of the seed will appear a faint light lime green.
Old seeds are literally covered with microbes. slowly feeding on the husk.
Dropping these in WARM or WARMED water will cause a water bloom
leaving you with a bunch of fuzzy seeds.
Keep on top of them and plant as soon as they crack. DO NOT
wait for a tap root, As they are under water and its not seaweed.
Works for me.
