Default APC/UPS Battery backup

Here is an interesting question that I have. I did a search in the forum and have skimmed through several respectable grow books I have with not much luck.

Does anyone use APC/UPS to back up their lights, pumps or anything else that is of the most importantance to you and your girls???

Being in a state that gets MUCHO T-storms, the power tends to flicker at times, some times it is out for a few mins, etc..

Thinking APC/UPS might be a good investment to keep the girls lights from flickering and being off for a few mins.

Now I do know that if the power is off for a long time, then the generator needs to be broke out, but just for small power interruptions APC/UPS might work?

Thoughts, concerns, experiences???

Thanks,

Sock

Damn good idea, but you would need to find one with sufficient amerapge to handle the lights, etc.

You will need a USP that can provide power for up to ??? hours? Of the size ones able to handle the kind of power we run (2000W) it is going to be in the $2k - $5k range, best guess.

This one can run 3000 Watts for almost 40 min. before it croaks. Cost is $3400+!

Yeah that is alot of money...:( I was thinking on the lines of something that would keep'em going for 5-10mins, and to keep flickers/surge's from happening. Anything that would work for any length of time is gonna be Mucho money.. And that Kind of money would be better spent on a generator. IMO...;)

Just a thought..

Backup generator is a good idea, but the power from a generator is generally not clean enough to operate one of the newer digital ballasts, and could damage it. If you're going that route, I suggest a "Power Conditioner" to go with it to clean up the generated power waves.

Hey Toke, fello Hurricane resident... Without giving a scientist bable definition of a Power Conditioner, I suppose it could be summed up like this.

AC current is kinnda like waves in the ocean. Analog equipment is not too picky about the waves coming to shore as long as they are 5' high with a certain low point, all the chop in the middle, analog equipment could care less about. However Digital Equipment, wants a killer ground swell of 5', off shore winds, with glass inbetween the sets.

So I suppose ISO is saying that a generator puts out crappy, hurricane waves that analog equipment can use but not Digital, a power conditioner cleans up all the chop inbetween sets..

Clear as Mud yet? LOL
