Totally New to MJ

I've been interested in exploring marijuana for the use of medical conditions of my father and myself. My father has early-onset Alzheimer's, which was luckily detected early and is being treated aggressively. However, he is extremely frustrated and scared all of the time. I would like to try and create a better mental and emotional place for him.

For myself, I have depression that affects my mood and causes body pain, and severe non-migraine headaches.

One problem is that I know almost nothing about marijuana. I have only smoked twice.

I have researched online and looked up strains and terms such as "indica" and "sativa"...... I have a very well-tested mind in biological theory and biochem, but I have no specific knowledge about how to grow (preferably outdoor, and space is no problem outdoors, acres of safe growing area. Climate is inland Northern California (South of Humbolt, North of Sacramento), not high elevation.)

I have no intention of selling or anything, but will certainly give to those I know are in pain.

I believe I am interested in about an 80/20 I/S mix.

If you would be willing to help me on this project I would be very appreciative.

Also, is it even worth looking into a way to create a marijuana strain that could potentially hybrid with opium?

HYbrid with opium WOW would love to try that (i think) is opium addictive? if not send ne a bag and i'll test it for ya no probs . in fact your probably gonna need some one with a bit more "taste" experience.........want my address

from what ive learnt science plays a big part in growing so you should have a super grow in no time

Welcome to GP.

Opium is a great pain reliever. But, it is addictive. It is derived from the poppy from which morphine and heroin are also derived. I don't think the poppy and cannabis plant would be an easy cross. It could be a project for true "cloning" , though.

crossing them by breading seeds is not possible as they are way to far distanced from each other genetically. would may work to some extend would be to on plant on the other - what the effects will be i can not tell.
But what i know is that poppies aren't high yielder - so you will need a small field full to get a workable amount out of them (the big hassle in Afghanistan, most farmers don't own and farm enough land to grow pharmaceutical qualities and up this way growing opium for war lords)

Some folks make an Opiated Hash...(this from another site)

"There is opiated hash, and non-opiated hash, though generally most U.S. street hash is non-opiated. Opiated hash has had opium (the dried sap of the opium poppy) mixed in with the kief before being compressed."

Opium has some serious addictive and health issues..and has some negative effects on the body that MJ does not have. If I were in your shoes, I would go for a strong Indica..if it did not stop the pain then smoke a 2nd bowl...all you'll get is more stoned, and less harm to your organs than the Opium would give.

Welcome to the site Knight it sounds like you are in prime country i was just up that way looking for a spot to grow outdoors gorilla style im in the bay area take a look at our faq here and look in the outdoor growing section im sure you will find that you are in a great location to grow some serious medicinal marijuana im also licensed with cali to grow Medibud too not hard to do but a good idea.

Thank you everyone for your responses to such an outsider. My main problem is that while I have a strong mind for theory, I have no practical botany skills. My father has all the chemical, soil and stuff in the world...... but I have no idea how to grow plants. I would prefer to grow mainly because I have no idea how to buy, and I want to be able to know the type of stuff I am getting.

What is the difference between 'hash' and conventional marijuana? I know the Middle East has a long, storied history involving Hashisnan warrior/assassins, but I have no idea what hash actually is.

Hash, is only the trichome heads off the buds of the marijuana plant. The trichomes contain all the chemicals that get you high and kill pain. Normally when I make hash if I start out with an oz of bud, I get maybe 3-4 grams. If you smoke habitually for pain, I wouldn't suggest hash. but if you need a super potent pain reliever at the time of onset, it works nicely, and instantly. Opiates/opium take a bit of time to kill any pain, even when smoked.
