I have a aero tote.. With the 360 deg sprayers do you need to spray the cley pellets with water or do you put the sprayers straight and not spraying on the cley pebbles.. The moisture from the sprays get the cley moist? I want to fix my new setup and right now I have them spraying right on the cley pebbles making sure there wet..

Well,

Today I found out that three of my plants were males so I hacked them down. What a bitch! One plant is definitely a female and the clone I took off of her (providence?) happened to be the one I decided to through in a one gallon bubbler the other day.

Here's my dilemma...I have three empty pods in one of my DWC units. All of the roots have grown together and I want to restock the unit with females. How do I get out all of the male roots without killing my female?

I still have another DWC unit with four plants. I hope some or all of them turn out to be female but they aren't showing their sex just yet. I'm praying they won't be a waste of time.

Hey folks, just thought I'd throw this out there as I've read some good stuff here on Ph that was a little too complicated for me.

The story is I bought a real cheap Ph meter and to ensure it wasn't crazy I got some Ph strips too. Well the meter is crazy and the Ph strips only go down to 6.2. I was looking for 6.

Anywho, 1 gallon of RO water + plus 1 tsp FF Grow Big nutes + 1 tsp white vinegar (4% acidity--it's on the label) gives me, according to the strips, a perfect 6.2. Any more acid and I'm off the available scale. Not perfect but 6.2 is better than 7.0. Right?

I've got a nitrogen issue I'm trying to fix.

BTW--and not a product endorsement in anyway--my nutes did not change the Ph at all.

Mods -- please do as you see fit with this post.

Hey guys, sorry for this probably dumb question, but when I am weighting down the air stones in a DWC system, is there any material that I need to avoid? For example, is there any metal that reacts negatively in the water or with the nutrients?

Thanks.

Hempy Bucket VS Bubble Bucket VS water farm VS Autopot, whats the best?

Peace guys

I got to check ut waterfarm and autopot systems in person, as for Bubble or and Hempty Buckets, i have been only reading online about them, i did pick up materials both for a Hempty and bubble bucket, i even ordered the auto pot (2 pot) set up for now., and im curious about water farm systems.

I also thought it was interesting to see things at a near by pet shop, i came accros water purifiers for fish tanks to control the PH, temperature and even auto feed nutrients, imagine using this in a reservoir with a auto pot or bubbler wet up, then i also found lizard and fish Florissant lights with higher watts, even Zoo Med Compact Fluorescent 10.0 UV Bulbs!, and i found some threads with people showing photos of these lights blended with there t5 set ups, they give great sun light power.

So i wanted to ask if anyone here has successfully used gear like i mentioned above to automatically control water quality, filter, temperature, Ph, even feeding the nutes from a reservoir or directly from a water pipe, and if these methods where successful because i see some gadgets here and there but no one seems to of utilized one simple system.

General Hydroponics FloraShield

Just wanted to write and share an experience I had with GH FloraShield.

I run a DWC setup with Humboldt Nutrient line. My plants were looking fabulously happy, but as a precaution (because I AM running DWC) I ran some of the FloraShield when doing my most recent res change. I followed the bottle's instructions to a T. (I measure all my nutrients with a 2 oz syringe broken down my the ml.) Anyway, this was my first time using it, and the bottle said to dilute 1:100 in your reservoir and let circulate for 1-2 hours before adding your nutrients. I did this as a protection against root rot - even though I keep my res under 70 degrees and my pH around 5.6.

Well, after 1.5 hours, I came back up to put in my nutrients and all of my previously happy, shiny plants were now all wilted and folded over. A few of the older fan leaves were starting to dry and get crunchy (a sign of chem burn). I immediately drained the res and let just water cycle for the next two hours, before adding my nutrients back in. They are slowly making a recovery, but look NO WHERE near as good as they did before this disaster. I have been running DWC for the past two years and never had anything like this happened before. (I was taught by a DWC guru who has been doing it for 20 years)

Just thought I would share the experience so others might not suffer the same fate :(:rain:

?? on cloning

hi all. I'm in the middle of my first hydro grow - here is a thread on it:

http://www.greenpassion.org/f20/first-hydro-grow-need-advice-feedback-please-16727/

I'd like to take a few cuttings for clones for my next grow. I figure I'd take a few lower branches from each of the plants - branches that aren't getting as much light and won't do much on this grow anyway.

I have a few questions:

1. I'm currently on day 23 of 12/12 lighting for flowering on these plants. Can I still take cuttings for clones or is it too late to have them go back into Veg mode?

2. If it's not too late and I can take some cuttings off my plants for clones what is the best way to "maintain" them so they stay alive and veg but not get too large before I can put them into flowering mode after my current grow is harvested?
I've read all about cloning so I think I can handle taking the cuttings and getting them to root, but I figure I have AT LEAST another 30 days or more for my current plants to go before harvest and if I vegged clones for that amount of time they would become too large. I already made that mistake on this current grow and my plants are much, much taller than I wanted them to be.
If I veg the clones for 30 days or more how can I keep them relatively small and short?
Would vegging them under CFL's work better for this rather than the 400W HPS I used to veg my current grow?

my goal is simply so that I can put clones immediately into flowering as soon my current grow is harvested, kinda like a perpetual grow I suppose, plus by taking clones I'll know they are all female rather than from seeds where you don't know what you will get

thanks for any help or suggestions you can offer.

first hydro grow, need advice and feedback please

Hi all.

newbie here on GP and I'm working on my first hydro grow.
brief summary of my set-up:

DWC type set-up
(2) 18 gal storage totes with 6 3" net baskets in each
each grow tub has 3 airstones in it
dedicated airpump per grow tub
bagseed (it's all I had to work with - mixed unknown strains - some decent other only "so-so")
FoxFarm nutrients - used Big Grow for the vegging and now currently using the Tiger Bloom for flowering.

I started the seeds germinating in 1" rockwool cubes than put them in the netbaskets with hydroton pellets under floro lights for the first few days than replaced the floro light with my 400w HPS light.
Tried to keep the light as close as possible to the plants without causing heat stress or burnt plants but they stretched more than I wanted regardless.
My plan was to only veg a short time to keep overall height down, I wanted more numerous shorter plants rather than fewer taller plants - plan didn't seem to work.
I vegged for 4-5 weeks with 24/0 lighting until plants were about 18-20" than switched to 12/12 lighting and changed the nutrients to to Tiger Bloom.

I still keep the light as close as possible to the plants but had to keep raising them when the plants would grow literally right into the light - I have been averaging a good 1"-2" growth a day. I'm on day 22 under 12/12 and they are still growing!! height is now 60" on the two tallest plants and the lights were just raised yesterday again to the highest they can go, I have no more room to raise the light anymore if they keep growing.

Starting out with 12 seedlings, and with a small "incident" that made me lose 3 plants and cutting out a few males I'm left with 7 females. One is very, very small and being blocked from most of the light so I'm probably going to cut her out also to make more room for the other, better plants.

About a week or so after switching to 12/12 lighting I also added a clamp-type reflector light with two 45w CFL bulbs and another standing light fixture with 2 65w CFL bulbs just to fill in some shadow areas to suppliment the main 400w HPS light.

*_QUESTIONS:_*

1. I'm at 22 days under 12/12 lighting for flowering - approx when should I expect the plants to stop stretching and growing so much??

2. do the plants look about where they should be for 22 days flowering?

3. any overall comments on the grow that may help me?

I admit I went into this hydro grow completely 100% clueless what I was doing. the fact that anything grew at all is amazing to me so any feedback, advice, or constructive criticism is welcome.

Flushing a DWC

When are the DWC guys flushing? 1 week before harvest?

Based on the answer to the first question, how do you determine that you are that timespan away from harvest?

I am approximately 2 weeks out, but have several different strains. I was thinking of one more rez change with nutes then flushing next week?

Can anyone recommend a good book?

OK....I've definitely decided on DWC/drip (copying HydroSpirit 6 pod setup) and CFL's (10 x 100w 6500k veg 2700k flower) for my cabinet. I have a LOT of pumps, etc.. left over from my recently disassembled saltwater aquarium and can put it together on the cheap. It would be foolish not to use them. I would like a good hydro book that I can reference for nutes and things without having to constantly log in to a forum (although I really like you guys :)). I will be using the forums for emergencies and advice and to journal.
With that said, Is there a hydro Bible? or a couple of books to get me going?
Thanks to all!!!!!!!

I've done two previous grows but both were in soil... This time around I'm doing a small (4, 2gallon buckets) DWC grow and was wondering something. I've read some posts and threads about this method and was wondering about changing the water in the buckets...

I'm not running a water farm style, its gonna be a simple bubble stone in bucket deal with no drip tube either, unless you guys think its absolutely required. I have read about some people just leaving the same water in the buckets and adjusting the PH and nute levels and topping with water when needed, then I read about other people changing the res water and nutes every week or so. I'm wondering which method is most user friendly, I have no problem changing buckets every week and adjusting ph and stuff, I just thought that leaving the water in the bucket for extended periods of time would invite more problems than it would be worth.

I've just today put the germinated seeds in peat cubes so I have time to tweak the system before its in use, any feedback would be great, thanks.

I have been doing some searching on here on carbs and I like the idea of using molasses, since there are no pumps to clog and I am religious about cleaning my reservoirs I don't see it being a problem in a DWC.

I am thinking 1 ml/gal in the rez, since its not a waste system. Dissolve in one gallon of warm water and add directly to the rez. Check and adjust pH. Thoughts?

well ive finally decided that its time...ive been smoking for almost 16 years now...no more getting over charged at the dispensery or sub par buds on the street...in all these years ive never once tried to grow myself...the time is now and the method ive chosen is dwc...id love to try soil and organic growing but i need the speed of hydro...i was looking at a few systems like waterfarm but have decided it would be easy cheaper and fun to build my own so thats the plan

i have a good sized walk in closet 4 1/2 feet by 5 feet with an 8 foot ceiling...my plan is 4 5 gallon buckets connected to a larger reservoir some kind of rubbermade container...and cfls at least for the veg cause i cant afford a nice light yet...hopefully i can come up with one before flowering...but for now a bunch of good cfls...so far all ive got is two 8 foot sections of air tube and 4 large bubble bars 6$ total at the dollar store...good deal...now for my first few questions

1. is my grow room too large? should i set up a lower ceiling somehow?

2. reflective paint or mylar? which works better?

3. would it be worth my while to put something over the carpet like maybe a section of that hard plastic people put under desks? and paint it or cover it with a sheet of mylar?

4. ive read a few threads on building the dwcs...some use a 'drip tube' thing like the waterfarm...some dont...is this part needed?

i plan on going shopping on tuesday and hitting up big lots walmart and the local hydro shop for the rest of the things i need...im very excited but nervous ill eff this up somehow...so thanks in advance for any advice any of you guys can give me

I have used GH for the last year and half. I have been getting tired of flushing every week. Been researching Canna. I am pretty sold on them being a great product. I am going to go with there whole line of Aqua series nutes with there rizotonic, PK 13/14, and the Canna boost. Im going to give em Hydrozyme, Sweet, Snow storm, gravity. And some Pro Tekt from dyna grow. Last couple of weeks Flora Nectar and banna manna.

With that said does anyone have anything good or bad to say about Canna? And what do you guys think about what I plan on giving my plants on this next run.

Thanks for everyones input.

Ph problems...

Hi,

Check out these Ph and EC readings since this morning:

Date: Thursday, October 22, 2009
Time: 9:05:04 AM
Res: DWC 1

Starting Ph - 6.45 EC - 89 PPM (9:05:04 AM)
Adjusted Ph - 5.69 EC - 314 PPM (9:15:42 AM)
Nutrients Added - Two teaspoons of FloraNova grow. (9:15:42 AM)
Checked Ph - 6.39 EC - 297 PPM (2:16:44 PM)
Adjusted Ph - 5.61 EC - 739 PPM (2:21:55 PM)
Nutrients Added - One teaspoon. I added back 1 gallon of Spring water making the overall PPM 739 (2:21:55 PM).
Checked Ph - 6.14 EC - 351 PPM (8:46:16 PM)

Res Temperature: 70 - 75
Ambient Temperatures: 77 - 79 degrees.
Relative Humidity: 42% - 46%

The Ph is going all over the place in my opinion. I understand that the Ph rises when the plants eat but I thought it was a more gradual process? I'd like to see the Ph stabilize a little bit at least. What do you think is going on? I'm using spring water in this DWC unit. I'm using tap in another unit and I'm still seeing similar Ph swings. The only difference is the PPM's have stayed the same in the other res, the plants aren't feeding at the moment.

I'm using FloraNova veg nutes right now. I'm seeing some brown rusting on a few leaf tips but nothing severe.

Thanks,
