Okay first off thanks Jangel for being so patient and helping me out so much, and tanks everyone else who's posted. I'm 8 weeks into my first crop with 3 beautiful ladies just into flowering and doing rather well. I started growing a cheap budgeted crop with the idea in mind that if it went well I would invest in a garden and grow a couple plants for myself so that I'd never have to pay a street vender again. Well here I am and I think this is something I can handle. I need some of the more seasoned horticulturists to lend their thoughts and help me get this perfect before I start investing serious money in this. Thanks in advance!

THE GOAL: I don't want to grow volume but for maximum potential from my plants. Only about 5 ounces of premium bud each harvest would be perfect! I want to grow for quality not quantity (I know this has a lot to do with the strain.

Alright, the grow area itself is going to be a closet that measures 27"(d)x42"(w)x84"9(t). I'm going to put up a 2x4" frame up on the inside of the closet for two reasons. To add stability (the walls are paper thin), and to add a better means to control environment. In this 2x4' skeleton I'm going to use Pink Insulation given to me by a friend, and then I'm going to top it with 1/4" plywood. Once the frame is finished I'm going to cover all for walls with black and white visquene and overlap the door with plastic and use velcro or zipper to make a door from the visqueen plastic. The purpose of this is two fold. This will keep the closet completely light proof and therefore appearing to be a normal closet. And it should give me an almost completely enclosed environment for optimal precise control of humidity, temperature, and co2 levels and for fragrance concerns. On top of the Plastic I'm going to put this FLIR Resistant Material (http://www.wormsway.com/detail.aspx?t=prod&sku=BI130&AC=1) in order for perfect heat and light reflection.

*I know this may be a extensive lengths but I want not only the utmost in security and secrecy, I also want perfect environmental control. Give me your thoughts on the structure thus far. Anything obviously wrong with it? *

For the overall exhaust, I have a rather simple plan really. In the floor of the closet I am going to put an air conditioning vent above a baffle box which will have a 10" Flange that will be connected by this Ducting (http://www.bghydro.com/BGH/itemdesc.asp?ic=AFADI10X25&eq=&Tp=) to a identical air conditioning vent and adjacent room. The ducting will be run bellow the house. If I find that I'm not getting adequate fresh air intake or you all deem necessary I will add this Duct Fan (http://www.bghydro.com/BGH/itemdesc.asp?ic=AEFSC102&eq=&Tp=) to the ducting to increase air flow. For the exhaust I'll be starting with this Filter (http://www.bghydro.com/BGH/itemdesc.asp?ic=AOCDBDFS05&eq=&Tp=). I'll be attaching that filter directly to this Inline Fan (http://www.bghydro.com/BGH/itemdesc.asp?ic=AEFEP08&eq=&Tp=)

*Does this system seem to have adequate enough air flow to be able to control my temps, humidity, and CO2 (I plan on supplementing C02) adjusting the fans' speeds via a dimmer switch? Do you think I could afford to run a 600w HPS in this space since it's vented directly out of the room? Would using insulated ducting make any difference? *

From here this thread will become something of a journal. I'll post up pics each week of the room as I construct it and get some advice as I go. Thanks to anyone who is willing to offer their opinion. which will be mounted to the Ceiling. From here if I can manage I'll the ducting through this reflector (I'll Find a nice Bulb and Ballast separately) and then down through the floor, if I can't I'm going to just run it down straight through the floor under the center of the house.

I've read that thinning out the lower third of flowering plants is beneficial and will help the plants focus more on producing larger buds. Is this true and if so what's the proper way to go about doing it?

1 Carbon Filter for Flow and Veg?

This is my first growing attempt. I am in the process of putting up my ventilation system in my 20(L)x8(W)x6.5(H) grow room. The room is divided by Visqueen with about 1/4 being dedicated to veg and 3/4 to flow. I have a 440CFM EcoPlus inline fan attached to the compatible 6' EcoPlus carbon filter. The filter is positioned is such a way that 1/4 of it will be in the veg room and 3/4 of it in the flow room. I am planning on cutting a hole in the Visqueen and somehow sealing it around the filter to use the one carbon filter and fan for both rooms.

Will this work?
Thanks for any input.

I am a hobby grower lookin to shoot the moon!!! I have a question for u guys/gals. I have a gas furnace that heats my house in the cold months. I have a small "hobby room going but I would like some more CO2 in the room. It is not a "sealed" room so I don't wanna invest a lot of $ on a setup just for it to leak out of the room. I wonder if you can use the gas furnace to give off some extra CO2. Wouldn't thte pilot light section of my furnace be an exact replica of one of the "Burners" that the Hydro store sells......someone please enlighten me!!

*Alright where to begin,

*_Well lets start with my goal :_
My goal is as followed; I wish to grow 1 single grow per year with a yeild of 5-6 LBS of dry ,cured , and healthy cannabis for my Wife An I .

*_How am I going to do it with only Four 600 hps?_*
This is the tricky part. I plan on having no timers for the 12/12 cycle I plan on manually doing it myself.
I wish to build 4x4 tables under each 600 hps for a total of 4 tables estimating on getting an ave yeild of 300 Plus grams per table .. for a grand total of 1200 grams around 2.5 lbs right.

*So this is where my decisions need some guidence :*
I am gogin to build 2 rooms . One room with 24/light and one 24/dark so I must manually move the light every 12 hrs from room to room or I must move the plants 12 hrs from room to room (this may be a time consuming task) ..
Just to make it clear IM gogin to build 2 8ft x 8ft rooms and have 4 lights do the work of 8..

_*Any one with any coments on how I could construct such a grow with an easy "swap"*_
_*method Please reply : *_

I dont want to influence you in what Im already thinking just yet but Id like to hear what you might sujjest to make it an easy switch that would take less then 5 mins every 12 hrs to Swapp out the dark and the light ..

but I'm sure you will.... have ideas..

Here I show you 2 nevilles: haze top left, bottom left, 1-SSH top right and 1-White Russian. They all look OK, except NH1 (top left).. she is smaller

With an IR thermometer, that one runs 80F, while NH2 (bottom left runs 76F, the same as SSH and WR runs at 73.

Since top left is smaller (and farther away from the light) it would be cooler. No matter what I do the descrepancies stay almost the same..

I'd expect WR, with broader leaves to be hotter...

6-7F difference.. too much?

Roof Mount Exhasts?

I have a question in regard to exhausts like this: Master Flow Power Roof Mount Vent 1600 CFM'S (Shingle Match Weatherwood) - PR3DSMWW at The Home Depot (http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&productId=100072633)

this one moves 1600CFM but as you can tell that is because it has such a wide opening.

i was wondering if anyone has ever tried to use one of these in a grow room before and too what success?

My room is a stand alone closet in the middle of the basement...i was thinking i could mount this on a side wall to draw air out, and along the outside of the venting in this fan create some type of carbon filter to wrap around it. (see pic)

any thoughts?

Hi, i have cultivated outdoors from bag seed but I have decided to take quite a large leap into indoor growing and i know i will need much help from you gents and few but proud ladies! Here is the list of what I am working, my current endeavors and my aspirations. I have researched grow extensively but am lacking in experience.

*Experience *

* Read: Jorges grow bible, Soma's: organic marijuana Soma Style
* I am a member of Rollitup and ICmag and have been for a couple months.

*Currently*

* Only 3/5 of my Nirvana NL seeds sprouted due to unexpected heat:frown:
* They are in a 3X2X3 grow box with one 27w and 2 14w CFL's
* I Have a 4X6X8 (only growing in 3.6X5.1 for proper W/SqF)grow room with a air cooled 1000w HPS
* have not yet bought 6 or 8 inch vortex that will be hooked up to carbon scrubber; when I do, I will not be using a fan for intake
* I plan on cloning in early/mid Jan.

*Wishful Thinking *

* I am hoping for at least a LB
* I am practically expecting 10oz
* I am going to use a Organic soil recipe that includes fox farm soil, peat moss, worm casting, perlite, and Soma's fav-Guano guano guano and more guano

If there is anything to add or suggest please do, for i am expecting it. shakehands.gif
What method would be best, I have considered SOG with growbeds for the most part.

Harvest Time; Soil vs Hydro

I have two of the same strains in both soil and hydro, the hydro bud formation looks to be almost 2 weeks to my estimate ahead of the soil plant that is very much the same hight.

Should all I'll face is a approximate 2 week lag of the soil plant or will I also see a smaller yield?

I started a new all soil grow and it troubles me about the slower formation of buds in soil and harvest period extention.

Thanks to you that have done both for your encouragement.

I'll post pictures later when they wake up at 9PM :)

my attempt to maximize space usage

Hey folks!

Well I recently had to give up the bedroom that I was using to grow in, and the only space I am now able to use is a little 32" x 32" closet.

Here's what I did.

First I found the biggest tent that would fit in that space. It's called a GrowLab and I got the 31" x 31" size.

I wanted to do aeroponics (previous grow was DWC, what a PAIN IN THE ASS) so I built a frame to fit inside the tent, that would house a dedicated reservoir below the aero chambers that are going to hold the plants.

I got this idea to use the storage totes from my DWC grow, and chop the top lip and stuff off so that they're just a flimsy plastic tub, very easy to work with and cram into whatever space I want (within reason).

Now I grow SoG, so lots of small plants close together with little to no veg time. So I decided to get a little aggressive and load up this space with 36 plant sites.

The sprayers are mounted upside-down under the spray bars, I used the spinner style ones. Three sprayers per bar, two bars per chamber, total 12 sprayers.

I also crammed a cooltubed 1000w HPS in there, a little much but it's what I had left over from my previous grow, can't really afford to buy any new equipment right now.

So check it out, let me know what you all think, any questions fire away!

The pics:

What I'm showing here is the "cant strip" pieces that I used for the corners. I needed vertical supports for my frame, and I would normally use 2x2s but they take up too much space, so I asked if there is anything like a 2x2 but cut in half diagonally. Turns out there is, called "cant strips", they're perfect! Good vertical support, without eating into the usable area of the frame. Later on you will see that I modified things slightly to take the edges off the corners so that the tent poles fit snugly, you'll see pics later.

Also shown here are the storage totes, with the tops removed so they're kind of floppy and easy to work with.

Also the beginning of the riser. I used a riser for the reservoir, so that I could bottom mount the drain so that I can use the same pump that powers the sprayers to completely empty the reservoir.

Hey everyone thanks for stopping by! I need your help on my grow. Right now I'm in the 2nd week of flowering my set of indoor plants. I've got 4 plants after the first week since they started showing sex (2 were already growing pollen sacks) and it looks like I've got 1 female, 2 hermaphrodites, and 1 of a different strain apparently because it isn't showing sex. One of the herms is about 50/50 pollen sacks/seed brapts and the second is mostly female. I was considering moving the two herms to a different location and flowering them but the light would be very limited. I was also considering just flowering them all together and dealing with the seedy product; what would you do? Keep in mind I knew that hermaphrodites from bag seed was very probable when I started. This grow has been on the cheap just to get a feel for things.

Ok so this could be me mistaking some normal plant parts for what i believe to be the pistils and nuts(i dont know what else to call them!), or maybe im an idiot, i dunno.

My plants have been on 18/6 since they went under the light. When I went to check them today, I saw this! Now the first two pics are of a definitively male plant, right? The third and fourth a female? Am I an idiot? How could this have happened if it is for real? What am i missing if its not?

Thanks as always!

I'm sucking air straight from outside via a 6" 445 CFM inline fan and need something that will not only prevents leaves and dust from coming in, but also mold and disease. Right now, this method of intake is the only thing that is working, but if anyone has ideas, please shoot them my way!!(Ive tried passive...just not enough fresh air coming in.) Also, its getting cold where iam, so I have to shut off the intake when the lights are off. (2-600W HPS).

Anyways, if anyone could recommend a good filter for this, that would be groovy:afro:

I have 6 plants (all around 4ft tall or so) under a 600 w HPS. They are in they're 5th week of flowering. Im thinking about adding 2 - 4 ft T5 lights (54 W, 5,000 lumens each) to add lighting to mostly underneath where theres not much light. Im doing this to hopefully increase yield (obviously :) and because ive had a bit of a powdery mildew problem, although its improving because of an added fan. I just figured there some people that can give their 2 cents on this as im a noob - only have done autoflower before.

Thanks!!

So of course after purchasing the tent i read a bunch of other tent companies stating that their tents are better because they are not made out of PVC and dont kill plants. I go check and of course mine is PVC.My question is, Has anyone experienced growing in a tent lined with PVC and if so were there any issues???

No smell from plants during flowering

Hi everyone thanks for all the answers to my last questions, i have another regarding the same plants and was wondering if you could help me out with some information.

1st time grow so didn't buy any expensive seeds but did use a reputable seed bank, got a strain called Big Bang (Fem) germinated five and four made it, re-planted them into larger pots to Veg for a few weeks, before flowering them i moved them into five ltr pots everything went well and the end result so far is four good plants with loads of buds on, but, i do have one concern and that is there is practically no smell from the plants at all, i would have thought that more than four weeks into flowering they would be smelling quite a bit. Am i doing something wrong??

recap; good seed's from reputable seed bank
          re-potted for veg and flowering
          only been giving them water
          400 watt light
plants getting enough light ( thanks to advice from my last post )
five weeks into and eight week strain

Any advice welcomed, seasoned smoker but virgin grower.

Thanks in advance

just wondering what fans i should use for a 6 inch cooltube.

I was thinking of using two axial fans on iether end like this

Amazon.com: 6-Inch 110VAC 250 CFM In-Line Duct Booster Fan: Electronics (http://www.amazon.com/6-Inch-110VAC-Line-Duct-Booster/dp/B0007N5LI6)

for a carbon scrubber i would use a fan simular with the carbon filter inside the cab & the fan sucking on the carbon filter blowing outside the cab.

only issue i think is a problem is, would two 250 cfm fans like this be enuff to blow enuff airflow thru the cooltube on a 10 ft run, ill be using it to cool a 400 hps, ill be running a pipe from the vent out fan to a drier connection in the wall only another 5 - 6 feet away, would i be better off with only 1 iIN axiel fan, & use a vortex fan for OUT thru the cooltube.

Also thinking of using two of the same fans for the IN air below the light where the plants are, & have a back draft damper so when the fans are off, the dampers close off, so no smells can come from inside the cab going outside. Odvistly the carbon filter will be running all the time, so would i even need dampers ?

Cheers,

Recuriculating DWC buckets VS Flood and drain buckets

I am new to the forum and wanted to get started with a debate that will hopefully help me determine how Im going to run my next setup. I started growing about a year and a half years ago. I was taught by a friend to use five gallon buckets with baskets, rockwool, Hydroton, and hydrofarms drip rings. I use a another five gallon bucket to kinda act as the control bucket or some may say its the reservoir. For Nutes I use GH 3 part. I have always seen a pretty good out comes. However it came to my attention that I could greatly improve my system by adding a true resievior with a float bucket, adding airstones to all my buckets, and then adding a pump and recuirtculating the whole system. I would be very excited to make these changes and see what type of improvments would be seen.

However it has came to my attention that flood and drain buckets with a reservior and a true control bucket may be just as good if not better. Not to mention cheaper as well.

Part of my question also includes if you do flood and drain buckets. Would you see higher yields with 5 gallon buckets vs the smaller 2 gallon buckets.

I have come down to the conclusion that I will do either 36 5 Gallon buckets on the DWC, or I will do 48 of the smaller flood and drain buckets. But again if it came down to going with the flood and drain. Would I be better off doing the 36 5 gallon or with the 48 2 gallon.

I have been told for the DWC to be most effective that you need to keep your water as close to 72 as possible. Which can be challenging for me in the summer months. One reason Im thinking that the flood and drain will be better.

Any advice is much apperciated.

Thanks.

Hi all, long time smoker 1st time grower :)

I have a few questions regarding flowering and nutrients and hope some of you kind people could shed some light my way, here goes;

1, during the flowering period 12/12 just how important is it to add nutrients to your water when watering and how often should you give the plants nutrients?

2, i have noticed that after only 4 weeks of flowering that my girls are starting to get yellow fan leaves at the bottom of each stem, is this normal for an 8/9 week flowering plant or should i be starting to worry??

as mentioned this is my first grow and any advice would be appreciated

my grow consists of a closet measuring 6' H x 2' D x 3' W
i have a 400 watt eco-lite with Veg and flowering bulbs (flowering being used now)
all 4 girls are in 5 gallon pots and have a fan blowing over them when ever the light is on.

Here are a few pics so you can see the girls.
