i wouldn't go by my word but to me it looks like it was a stem that was growing and died or something? hope it doesn't harm anything.
EDIT: i did a color swap in my photo editor to try and make it easier for people to see. (or easier for me anyway) are those black spots on it dirt or are they necrotic?
