the syrup smell shouldn't come from a vegging plant normally as sentravapor said. Normally it is either the soil or the fertilizer that causing the smell in this stage - my BioBizz causing a sweetish salty smell, feeding molasses leaves a caramel smell for about 2 days as well.
As long as the smell doesn't make you sick or tips your neighbors off, i would just crank the fan up and check for proper ventilation from the outside, as this reduces the smell a bit.
