Wow...you all sure picked up on the "whooping" part!
Actually, I was thinking more along the lines of:
Scenario: Jack goes quail hunting before school, pulls into school parking lot with shotgun in gun rack.
1957 - Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack's shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack.
2007 - School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized students and teachers.
These things, while funny, really highlight for you younger folks some of the differences that exist now vs. "then".
My dad didn't "spare the rod" either, but it was never something that was overbearing in life...fact was, if I did the crime, I took the punishment. My dad never once whacked me with a belt that I didn't have it coming..and it didn't hurt me one bit. On top of that, my dad and I have been good friends as well as business partners for many, many years.
I also remember some stuff he and I pulled that had my mom pissed at us for weeks at a time...
(like when I was 17 and he told me he wanted to try MJ...(he never had). I got ahold of some Thai stick and rolled up a fatty...best TV football game we ever watched
...(till mom came home that is!)
