I'm in the same boat man. Going on 23 here, and I got an occasional whooping when I stepped out of line. In one regard this is a sure fire way of reducing the chance that the act in question will happen again. In other aspects there are some things that can be talked out with kids. But Its obvious the span of differences with a child can't all be solved on an intellectual plane. You are dealing with a child! They don't yet understand the reasons behind "why?". They do however understand that "if this equals my cheeks stinging for the next 2 hours... i probably shouldn't do it."
Should we beat the idea of "bad equals pain" into there brains like the tv beats the idea of "buy equals good" into us? no. But a slap or two to correct them every so often, won't hurt the outcome of there personality. Its the lack of being beaten when your wrong that makes you a bad person, because that's when they start to think its ok.
