Hey raf33,
I've noticed with trees that when you cut a few branches off they suddenly start growing like mad. First of all, you now have all the roots and less foliage, so the energy stored in the roots gets used to grow new stems. Secondly, this is normal as the plant will grow faster to repair and overcome the damage and get back on track toward making new leaves to catch light. That's why topping a plant can make it grow that much faster.
