It's all about the money my friend.
Think about it.
A huge majority of the non-violent drug offenders are housed in Private prisons supported with Federal and State tax revenues. The more of us they arrest, the more folks get to go to another of the private prisons, and the CORPORATION that OWNS the prison gets another $50,000 - $75,000 a year to house them.
Do ya think the Corp's that own those prisons are going to just sit back while we empty out the prisons and end the huge stream of money going from our pockets into those corporations pockets?
The Gov't will claim that the companies can not lay afford to off 5000 prison guards, so guess what? If they lay them off (so our brethren can get out of jail!) then we will still be supporting them (guards) as they won't be able to find private sector jobs.
That's just one tiny part of the issue...the list of those impacted goes on and on...there would be a MAJOR financial impact to the US Gov't if MJ ever became legalized, HOWEVER, if the US Gov't was smart enough to tax retail sales of MJ then they could easily manage the shortfall.
They won't do it. I don't think they can.
