My thinking is that, once they turn yellow and the tips start dying it means the leaf has "given it's all" to the plant, and has expired. Leaving it on there accomplishes nothing, as it has nothing left to give to the plant.

Once they get to that point (or very close) they are removed. No sense having a bunch of "dead soldiers" hanging about on your plant.
